Delta Theta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is in its sixtieth year of existence. It draws members from the educational institutions of Port Neches and Groves. The chapter was organized on March 20, 1954, in the Sky Room of Hotel Beaumont. Miss Eula Lee Carter, honorary state founder from Fort Worth, presided, and Miss Phyllis Ellis, state executive secretary, also from Fort Worth, assisted.
Fourteen "key women educators" of diverse personal and professional backgrounds from the Port Neches and Nederland districts were initiated as charter members. Together they exhibited the leadership to which future members became accustomed, with seven of the original fourteen serving as chapter president. Delta Theta has a rich heritage brought to life by a special group of ladies who shared an ambitious vision for women teachers. They dared to dream of better lives for women, especially women teachers. Their dreams generated the talent and courage necessary to follow the path set by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton. They went beyond the comfortable and found new levels of understanding as they challenged one another. As a result, lasting friendships were formed. From its infancy in the 1950's until the end of the sixth decade of existence approaching in 2014, Delta Theta continues to follow the dreams and goals of the Founders of Delta Kappa Gamma as well as the charter members of the chapter. Those decades of growth are summarized below.
